Active acne treatment: what the research says | Tratamiento activo: lo que dice la evidencia

The short version
Our 30-day kit is daily support: a moisturizer, a sunscreen and three supplements. It does not replace acne medication. According to the 2024 guideline of the American Academy of Dermatology, the first-line treatments for acne are topical benzoyl peroxide and topical retinoids, including fixed combinations of the two (strong recommendation). Evidence for diet and supplements is weaker and mixed, which is why we treat them as an add-on, not as the base.
New: an over-the-counter combination
On May 22, 2026, the FDA approved Differin Epiduo Acne Gel (adapalene 0.1% + benzoyl peroxide 2.5%) for over-the-counter use in people 12 and older, the first OTC acne treatment with two active ingredients. The manufacturer says it will be sold at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Ulta and Amazon starting in summer 2026 (manufacturer announcement). Availability and price may vary: check with your pharmacy or retailer.
In a randomized, double-blind trial of 517 people (study record), about 30% reached "clear or almost clear" skin after 12 weeks with the combination, versus about 11% with a gel without active ingredients, and the combination worked better than each ingredient alone. It is not a guarantee: results vary and it takes weeks.
Before you start
- Read the Drug Facts label and the directions on the package.
- Irritation (redness, dryness, stinging) is common in the first weeks. Start gradually, do a 2-day patch test on a small area and add it as its own new thing.
- Use a moisturizer and a daily sunscreen. Retinoids make skin more sensitive to the sun.
- Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, nursing or planning a pregnancy, or if you have eczema or very sensitive skin.
- If your acne is severe, painful, leaves scars or has not improved after about 12 weeks, see a dermatologist. Stronger options, such as isotretinoin or spironolactone, require a prescription.
Where to find it
Ask at your pharmacy or look it up at Amazon, Walmart, Target or Ulta.
How it fits with the Kazven kit
If you use an acne medicine, keep the routine simple: gentle cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen from the kit, one new thing at a time, and write it down in the 30-day tracker that comes with the kit.
